The particular subject here is Saint John, New Brunswick, one of the oldest incorporated cities in Canada, struck by a major blaze on June 20, 1877. The fire swept through the city's crowded commercial district, and its scale made it one of the most talked-about urban disasters of the period in the Maritimes and across the border in New England. Currier & Ives, the New York firm that turned current events into affordable color lithographs, produced this sheet to reach buyers eager for images of the disaster. Such prints mix reportage with dramatic composition, so the firefighting scene and the crowds are worth reading as much for what they show of street life as for the flames themselves.
