Here the bird's-eye view shows the downtown core of Boston as it looked during the Great Boston Fire, which broke out on the evening of November 9, 1872, and burned for roughly a day through the wholesale and business district. The record gives the loss as about $150,000,000, a figure reported at the time that is higher than many later estimates. This is a photograph of a drawing made about twenty-two years after the event, when artists often reconstructed disasters from memory and eyewitness accounts. Its aerial perspective, which lifts the viewer above the streets, makes the scale of the destroyed blocks easy to grasp.
