This long panorama pairs its view of the ruined business and residence districts with a numbered key to 44 landmarks, so viewers could match each burned building to its name. The "Special Artist" credit and the copyright notice tie it to *Frank Leslie's Illustrated News*, which sent artists to record the blaze for readers across the country. The fire began on the evening of October 8, 1871, and burned for more than a day, destroying about 3.3 square miles and leaving well over 100,000 people homeless. Along the skyline, the stripped walls and chimneys still standing were often all that remained of a city block.
