The Great Chicago Fire of October 8, 1871, is the event this picture records, and the title pins it to a single date. The fire began on the city's South Side and burned for roughly two days, destroying much of the downtown core and leaving tens of thousands of residents homeless. Fire engines and their crews were central to the story, both as the city's defense against the blaze and as a symbol of how overmatched its equipment was against a city built largely of wood. The scene would have been widely circulated in the years after, shaping how Americans understood urban fire and the rebuilding of Chicago.
