Drawn from the west side of the city, this color lithograph shows Chicago as the fire of October 9, 1871 swept through its built-up districts. The blaze had started the night before and burned for roughly two days, destroying about 3.3 square miles, including much of the downtown business core, and leaving tens of thousands of residents homeless. Printed by Gibson & Co.'s Steam Press of Cincinnati, Ohio, and registered for copyright, the image was one of many popular prints that met public demand for pictures of the disaster.
