Unlike the many fire scenes on this board, this lithograph documents a specific event: the great fire that swept through downtown Boston on November 9 and 10, 1872. The blaze began in the city's commercial district and burned for about two days, destroying hundreds of buildings and causing losses estimated at tens of millions of dollars. Currier & Ives, the New York firm known for topical prints, issued this view the same year, so it reflects how quickly news of the disaster reached a national audience. The print is a useful record of how the public followed such catastrophes through pictures.
