Few disasters of the 1870s drew as much attention in the United States as the fire that struck Saint John, New Brunswick, on June 20, 1877, and this lithograph records it under the plain title "The great fire at St. John, N.B." Saint John was a busy Atlantic port, and its wooden buildings and crowded streets let flames spread quickly through the commercial core. Currier & Ives, the New York firm known for its quickly produced prints of newsworthy events, issued the image within months of the blaze. Such prints gave readers far from the scene a dramatic view of a distant catastrophe, and they show how fire, and the engines sent to fight it, held a strong place in American popular imagery.
