A horse-drawn fire engine of an older design, labeled as New York's, makes this picture a record of the city's firefighting equipment before motor apparatus took over. Fire companies in American cities relied on teams of horses to pull engines through crowded streets, often at a gallop, and many departments switched to motorized trucks in the 1910s. The caption comes from the Bain News Service, a press photo agency whose glass negatives were later gathered into the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress. The record does not confirm the engine's exact model, date, or station, so the title should be read as the photographer's note. The image is still useful for seeing how the horses, harness, and apparatus were arranged.
