Five firemen stand with two horses in the doorway of a firehouse in Webster Groves, a suburb west of St. Louis, Missouri. Pictures like this one capture the period when horse-drawn equipment still answered alarms, before motor apparatus took over most American fire companies in the 1910s and 1920s. The horses at the threshold show how central animals still were to fire work of the era. The date is given only as a range from about 1890 to 1933, and the caption card behind the record has not been fully verified, so the exact moment remains uncertain.
