Few insurers of the 1860s were so openly tied to the fire service as the Firemen's Insurance Company, whose name alone announced its connection to New York's volunteer fire companies. This c1866 lithograph was produced by L.H. Biglow & Co. as an advertisement, and the company held its copyright. Before paid municipal departments became the norm, volunteer companies fought fires with hand-pumped engines, and insurers often relied on those firefighters' reputations to win business. The piece is a useful window into how New York companies marketed fire protection after the Civil War.
