At the Brooklyn Navy Yard, a group of firemen gathered outdoors for Mass in May 1908, bringing a religious service out into the open air. The glass negative comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the work of a news photo service that supplied newspapers with pictures of the day's events. The title comes from unverified notes the agency wrote on its negatives, so the exact occasion is not fully confirmed. The scene still shows how closely fire companies and their members' faith were tied in that period. Look at the uniforms and the orderly arrangement of the crowd, which reflect the discipline of the department.
