The Goodwill Hummingbird No. 5 was one of the steam fire engines in service with the fire department in York, Pennsylvania, when this view was made around 1911. Steam pumpers of this kind were hauled by horses to a blaze and fired up on arrival, and by the 1910s many towns were beginning to replace them with motorized apparatus. The photograph was copyrighted by the firm Simon & Murmane, and its caption card is unverified, so the date and details are best treated as approximate.
