Elizabeth, New Jersey, a port city on Newark Bay in Union County, is the place named in this print's title, which points to a municipal fire department and its equipment. The catalog card gives no date, and the only name attached to it, Hart, Chas., is unverified, so the maker and the exact occasion remain unknown. Early in the twentieth century, many American cities were moving from horse-drawn steam pumpers and hose wagons to motorized apparatus, so an image of a city's fire department from this period often shows that transition. Comparing the engines, uniforms, and station details with dated records would help place it.
