This stereograph shows Boston firefighters racing to a call, a scene that captures the department's horse-drawn era, when steam engines and hose wagons were pulled at full gallop through city streets. Stereo cards like this one were made to be viewed through a hand-held stereoscope, giving the flat print a sense of depth and motion. The card was copyrighted by B.L. Singley, a commercial publisher of stereographs, and it reflects the early 1900s appetite for dramatic scenes of city life. Notice the crowded street and the speed of the horses, which show how central animal power still was to urban firefighting before motorized apparatus replaced it.
