Unlike the fire scenes Currier & Ives sold widely, this print is a blank membership certificate, with open spaces left for a member's name, company, and number. Its decoration of fire engines and firefighters shows how proud 1870s fire companies were of their equipment and their membership. Many companies, especially volunteer ones, functioned as social clubs as well as emergency crews, and a printed certificate let them issue proof of membership without commissioning a new design each time. The firm was based in New York and is known for color lithographs of American life.
