Unlike the engine scenes on this board, this lithograph is a blank membership certificate, with spaces left for a member's name and a company number. Currier & Ives, the New York firm famous for its popular prints, issued it around 1889. Volunteer fire companies in American cities were civic and social institutions as well as firefighting crews, and members often displayed decorative certificates like this one. The printed fire engine and ornamental border show how the firm turned a practical document into something worth hanging on a wall.
