This view shows a combination chemical engine with the fire department at Hoquiam, a lumber town on Grays Harbor in western Washington. Around 1913, many American fire companies were replacing horse-drawn equipment with motorized apparatus, and combination units like this one carried a chemical tank for small blazes along with hose for larger fires. The photograph is credited to H.G. Nelson, and its caption card lists it under firehouses in Washington, so it records both the equipment and the station that housed it. The record gives few other details about the scene, but it offers a useful look at municipal firefighting in a timber town of that period.
