Stationed at the Yildiz Palace, this steam fire engine belonged to a fire brigade unit drawn from the Imperial Military, as the album caption states in both Ottoman Turkish and French. Yildiz was the main residence of Sultan Abdul Hamid II, who ruled from 1876 to 1909, and its extensive grounds held many buildings that needed protection from fire. Steam pumpers like this one replaced hand-operated engines in many cities during the late 1800s, giving crews far greater water pressure. The photograph comes from an album documenting Istanbul's institutions, now held in the Library of Congress's Abdul-Hamid II Collection.
