This photograph shows a steam fire engine of Istanbul's fire brigade posed in its ready and alert position, with the horses that pulled it standing in harness. The caption, written in Ottoman Turkish and French, identifies it as number 23 in an album documenting the brigade's personnel and equipment. Steam pumpers were a major advance over hand-operated pumps, and they let crews reach and fight blazes faster in a city where timber buildings and crowded neighborhoods made fire a constant threat. The album belonged to the collection assembled for Sultan Abdul-Hamid II, whose reign from 1876 to 1909 included deliberate efforts to modernize Ottoman public services.
