The wagon in this photograph carries the tools that accompanied a steam fire engine of Istanbul's fire brigade, shown as a separate piece of equipment rather than the engine itself. Its caption, written in Ottoman Turkish and French and numbered 27, identifies it as one entry in an album of the brigade's personnel and equipment. The album belonged to the collection of Sultan Abdul-Hamid II, who ruled the Ottoman Empire from 1876 to 1909 and had many photographs of the empire's institutions assembled in this way. Steam-powered pumpers were a fairly new technology in the city during these years, so the photograph documents both the machines and the supporting gear that kept them running.
