This glass negative shows a fire engine, though its title comes from the National Photo Company's own notes and has not been independently verified. The company worked in Washington, D.C., and its negatives date from roughly 1908 to 1919, a period when many American fire departments were moving from horse-drawn apparatus to motorized equipment. The record notes streaks and blemishes from the deterioration of the original coatings, which can soften detail in the plate. Those flaws are part of the negative's physical history, and they show how glass plates age.
