A crumpled fire engine, its wreckage the subject of this 1922 glass negative, marks a moment when motorized apparatus was replacing horse-drawn pumpers in American cities. The National Photo Company, which operated in Washington, D.C., made many such pictures of everyday city life in the early twentieth century, and its negatives were often captioned after the fact. The record's title, "Fire engine wreck," comes from unverified notes on the negative sleeves, so the exact circumstances of the crash are not documented. The glass plate itself shows streaks and blemishes from the deterioration of its original coating.
