Before the Civil War, Philadelphia's fire companies were close-knit civic and social organizations, so this preamble and set of resolutions reads as more than a formal notice. Adopted by the Philadelphia Fire Department in the weeks after Abraham Lincoln was shot at Ford's theater in April 1865, it records the department's grief and its formal expression of sympathy. Resolutions like this were a common way for civic bodies, fraternal groups and volunteer companies to publicly register their loss during the national mourning that followed. Philadelphia was also a stop on the funeral journey, which made the city's displays of grief especially visible.
