A motorized apparatus rather than a horse-drawn one, this glass negative shows a New York Fire Department auto extension pipe, a piece of equipment that reflects how quickly city fire companies moved from horses to motor vehicles in the early 1900s. The image comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress. Bain's news service supplied photographs to newspapers in New York and elsewhere, and its negatives generally date from about 1900 to the 1920s. The title is taken from the caption cards, which the collection describes as unverified, so the exact date and the specific device shown should be read with that caveat in mind.
