A horse-drawn wagon appears alongside electric street lamps in the foreground of this view of St. Louis, with a Western Electric plant rising in the background. The pairing captures a transitional moment: around 1900, horses still hauled much of the freight in American cities, while electric lighting and manufacturing were spreading quickly. Western Electric made electrical and telephone equipment, so the plant behind the lamps stands for that new power. The record comes from an old caption card that has since been revised, so treat the date as approximate.
