Five men pitch hay onto a horse-drawn wagon, while a separate man works a horse-drawn hay rake, so the picture shows more than one stage of the harvest. Around 1903, when this was made, farms still gathered and moved hay almost entirely by hand and with animal power, using pitchforks, wagons and rakes pulled by horses or mules. The photograph was copyrighted by H.T. Mitchell, and its details come from an old caption card that has not been verified, so the exact farm and location remain uncertain.
