Supplies moved on four legs at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas, where a team pulls a commissary wagon loaded with unbleached flour. The post, established in 1876, was an active Army base in the early 1910s, with cavalry and artillery units drawing rations and equipment through the quartermaster and commissary system. George Grantham Bain's news photography agency often recorded routine military work like this, offering a view of everyday army logistics before the First World War. The harness, the load, and the reliance on horses at a time when motor vehicles were spreading are all worth a closer look.
