Washington's horse-drawn streetcars ran on iron rails laid down the city's avenues and streets for much of the late 1800s, before electric trolleys and then motor buses replaced them. This print shows one of those cars, pulled by a team of horses, and its caption card carries the tracing "Street RR," the shorthand used for a street railroad company. The card records no date, so the exact year remains unknown, but the setting places the scene in the decades when horse power was the standard way to move passengers through a growing capital. Animal-drawn transit like this was a common sight in American cities of that era, and the harness, track and open car are worth a close look.
