A horse-drawn streetcar stands on Broadway in Bridgeport, Connecticut, in front of the Wheeler & Wilson Manufacturing Company, a sewing machine maker. Nathaniel Wheeler and Allen B. Wilson founded the firm in the 1850s, and it became one of the largest sewing machine manufacturers in the country. Horse-drawn street railways carried workers and shoppers through American cities from the 1860s until electric trolleys replaced them in the 1890s, so the scene shows urban transport in transition. The caption card gives no date, so the exact year remains uncertain.
