Two people stand beside a horse-drawn ice wagon in a street, one of them holding a heavy block of ice, while a house stands behind them. Before electric refrigerators, households relied on delivered ice to keep food cold, so an ice wagon was a familiar sight in towns across the South. This image comes from a series of Georgia photographs assembled by W.E.B. Du Bois for the 1900 Paris Exposition, which set out to show Black life in the state through ordinary work and daily routines. The wagon and its load show a working trade, and the figures hold their poses with care.
