Posed in a horse-drawn wagon beside a towering redwood, Theodore Roosevelt sits among several companions in a photograph dated around 1903, the year he toured the American West. That trip took him through California's forests, where he spent time with naturalist John Muir and where the size of the old-growth trees impressed many visitors. Roosevelt, who had become president in 1901 after William McKinley's assassination, used such journeys to build support for conservation and the protection of public lands. The caption information is unverified, so the exact location and the number of people shown should be read with some caution.
