Roosevelt is shown riding in a horse-drawn carriage on his way to the Capitol for his inauguration, the ceremony that marked the start of his full term on March 4, 1905. He had taken office in 1901 after William McKinley's assassination and then won election in his own right in 1904. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by a Washington news photographer whose agency sold images to newspapers. Its date is approximate, since the record was assembled from old caption cards, but it offers a useful view of how presidential ceremonies were pictured for the public in the early 1900s.
