Giant sequoias in the Mariposa Grove, in the Sierra Nevada of central California, tower over a road where a horse-drawn carriage makes its way through the trees. The Detroit Publishing Company produced this color print between about 1898 and 1914, using the photochrom process to tint photographs for sale to travelers and armchair tourists. Before automobiles reached the park, visitors often arrived by stagecoach or private carriage, so the scene shows how people once experienced the grove. The small figures and vehicle beside the massive trunks convey the sheer scale of the trees.
