A private droski, the light open carriage once common on the streets of Petrograd, is the subject here, and its owner's private ride marks it as a survivor of an older city life. The picture is dated circa February 25, 1918, a few weeks after the Bolshevik government had taken power and just as the city was entering a period of food shortages and upheaval. In that period, privately owned carriages and their horses were becoming rarer on the streets, so the scene records a form of transport that was giving way to requisitions and hardship. The Library of Congress catalogs the print under the city's name, which had been Saint Petersburg until 1914.
