A Buick roadster has pulled to the edge of a narrow country road above Liberty, New York, to let a horse-drawn wagon pass. The scene reflects a moment of transition, when automobiles were becoming more common but many rural roads were still used mainly by horses, wagons, and carts, and motorists often had to slow down and yield. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news photographs made by the Bain agency in New York in the early twentieth century. The date on the caption card is marked with a question mark, so treat the year as approximate.
