A horse-drawn wagon carrying suffragists on its way to City Hall, where they were to hand Mayor William Gaynor tickets to a Yonkers suffrage event, makes this one of the more unusual pictures of the movement in 1913. The photograph was taken on August 30 by George Grantham Bain, a news photographer whose pictures document New York street life in the early twentieth century. By 1913 automobiles were spreading through city streets, so a horse-drawn vehicle carrying a political delegation shows how such campaigns still relied on older ways of getting around. The picture also records the push for women's suffrage in the years before the vote was won nationally in 1920.
