Ulysses S. Grant died at Mount McGregor, New York, in July 1885, and his funeral procession moved through New York City that August, drawing enormous crowds. This print reproduces a wash drawing by J.I. Lloyd showing the horse-drawn catafalque at the center of the scene, with Civil War veterans marching in the parade and spectators lining the route. Because the record is based on an unverified caption card, the exact date and details should be treated with some caution. Still, the image captures how the city marked the passing of a general who had led the Union to victory and then served two terms as president.
