Ulysses S. Grant, the Union general who later became president, stands with the horse the title identifies as his war horse, a companion he rode through much of the Civil War. Stereographs like this one were printed as pairs of images meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which gave viewers in the decades after the war a sense of standing beside famous figures. The caption card gives no date, and its details are unverified, so the exact year of the view is uncertain. Images of Grant were widely sold as souvenirs of the war's leading commander, and this one reflects that appetite for personal glimpses of him.
