Ulysses S. Grant poses with his war horse, the mount most associated with his Civil War campaigns, and the stereo format gives the pairing a sense of depth. Stereographs like this were produced in large numbers in the decades after the war, and Grant, first as a general and later as president, was among the most photographed men of his era. The caption card credits J.F. Jarvis' Stereoscopic Views as publisher but records no date, so the year of the exposure is unknown. The card's older catalog notes have not been verified.
