A Cossack rank gives this wood engraving its title: a sotnik, the captain who commanded a company of roughly a hundred riders in the Russian cavalry. The print shows the officer with his horse in a winter setting. It appeared in the September 1890 issue of the *Journal of the U.S. Cavalry Association*, a publication that carried material on foreign armies for American officers. The record's details are unverified, so the officer's identity and the exact circumstances of the scene remain uncertain.
