Lincoln's Springfield house at Eighth and Jackson streets appears here with his horse, shown as it looked when he came home at the end of his 1858 contest with Stephen A. Douglas. The family lived in that house from 1844 until Lincoln left for Washington in 1861, and he returned to it after the debates that brought him national attention. The picture is a photograph of a lithograph, so it reproduces a printed image rather than the scene itself. The c1886 date and the copyright credit to H.H. Kingsbury come from an older caption card that has not been verified.
