The lithograph shows the trotter Trustee at the twentieth mile of his match against time, an attempt to trot 20 miles in one hour on the Union Course on Long Island on October 20, 1848. Laid out in Queens in the early 1820s, the Union Course was among the earliest purpose-built racetracks in the United States and a common venue for match races. Nathaniel Currier published the print in New York that same year, as part of a steady stream of sporting subjects that reflected public enthusiasm for harness racing. It offers a useful glimpse of how a timed trotting feat was presented to the public.
