Judge Fullerton, shown here in harness and driven by Dan Mace, was one of the trotting horses whose records and appearances drew public attention in the 1870s, when harness racing on trotting tracks and country roads was a popular pastime. Currier & Ives, the New York firm that made many prints of famous horses and their drivers for a broad middle-class market, issued this hand-colored lithograph in 1874. Its catalog number in the firm's standard reference, Gale Research's *Currier & Ives: A catalog Raisonné*, is 1001. Such portraits show the horse in its sulky, with the driver's posture and the rig's details recording how trotting was actually done.
