The subject is Gloster, a trotting horse shown after his first-place finish in a $6,000 purse for horses timed at 2:20 (a mile in two minutes and twenty seconds) at Rochester, New York, on August 14, 1874. His dam was by Stockbridge Chief, a well-known trotting sire whose bloodline was prized by breeders of the period. Currier & Ives produced many colored lithographs of celebrated trotters in the 1870s, when harness racing drew large crowds and the firm's prints sold widely to owners and admirers. The hand coloring gives the horse's coat and the harness detail a richness that the black-and-white lithograph alone could not carry.
