Here the trotter St. Julien appears at full speed, handled by his celebrated trainer and driver, Orrin A. Hickok, whose name appears in the title as "Hikok." Hickok was one of the best-known harness men of his day, so his presence signals a horse that had built its reputation on the track. Currier & Ives issued many racing and trotting subjects in the late nineteenth century, when harness racing drew large crowds and the firm's sporting prints reached a wide public. The sulky and the horse's stride are worth a close look, since they show how the period's fans valued speed in the trotter above all.
