St. Julien, billed in the title as the "king of trotters," is shown at full speed with the celebrated trainer and driver Orrin A. Hickok at the reins, and the title also names Volunteer as the horse's sire. Hickok was among the best-known harness drivers of his day. Currier & Ives issued many trotting subjects in the 1880s, when harness racing drew large crowds and a fast trotter could become a sporting celebrity. The print leans on motion, with the horse's extended stride and the light racing vehicle carrying the eye across the sheet.
