A horse-drawn cage wagon carries lions through the grounds of the Society Circus at Long Branch, New Jersey, in this view dated August 1909. The caption names trainer Chas. P. Doelger and credits M.A. Rice as the driver, so the picture records both the animals and the people who handled them. Horse-drawn cage wagons were a familiar sight before motor trucks, when circuses and menageries traveled by road and relied on teams for heavy work. The image belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection of news photographs made by the Bain News Service, though the title rests on information the service recorded and has not been independently verified.
