Mrs. Sophie Gummey poses in a horse-drawn hack, pulled by a horse named "Babinette," at Long Branch, the New Jersey seaside resort. In the early 1900s, Long Branch was a fashionable summer destination for wealthy New Yorkers, and carriage drives and riding along its shore were a central part of resort society. The photograph comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a wire agency that sold news pictures to newspapers. The record's date and caption were recorded from the original negative and caption card, and they have not been independently verified.
