Long Branch, the New Jersey shore resort, is the place named in this glass negative's title, which reads "Long Branch Horse Shoe." The title comes from Bain News Service data that has not been verified. Long Branch drew wealthy summer visitors from New York and Philadelphia for much of the late 1800s, and horses were central to that life, through carriages, riding, and the nearby racing at Monmouth Park. The Bain collection came from a news photo service active in the early twentieth century, and its images generally record such scenes in a quick, reportage style. No date is recorded, so the exact moment is uncertain.
