Long Branch, the Jersey Shore resort town, was a favored summer retreat for wealthy New Yorkers in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and its horse shows drew riders and carriage enthusiasts from fashionable society. This glass negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, the work of a New York news photo service that supplied pictures to newspapers. The record is undated, and the title comes from the agency's own caption notes, so the exact event and year remain unconfirmed. Even so, the image hints at the equestrian pastimes that once defined summer leisure on the coast.
